Good work Tom. I know the prices here in Michigan are a little more sane, $7-$8 for a prime time new release, but that's still more than I want to spend. I'd much rather buy a DVD and enjoy it time and again in my own home.
As far as Rob Schneider goes, I don't know who goes to see his films, not me. Then again they aren't really blockbusters, I don't think any of his movies have broke $100M on his own, so it sounds like he's just bringing in about two weekends worth of teenagers with no other movie choices available to him. |

| Just for the record, I rented a laserdisc and bought another one. The renter (volcano) only had sound in one channel and the one I bought (austin powers) I couldnt get the commentary track to turn off. And I soon got a DVD player and wasnt too enthused about laserdisc anymore. I knew my good friend Fuersty would appreciate my genorosity. Christmas comes early this year. |

| This column was even better than the last Fuersty. I have been throw this dilemna a number of times. Once I got double burned at Hollywood video when they had buy tow movies for $15 and I got Blow (which blew) and Unbreakable (which was unbearable). I know the price of defeat but also know the feeling of glory (Snatch was a solid $8 pickup... first time baby!). You had me in stitches with the ole "hide it behind exorcist II VHS." Thats the ole Fuersty I know! Keep up the good work. |

Ok, so I'm anal besides being a Jackass... I just can't find it in my tiny little heart to buy used DVD's. Most of the time. I say this because I fell pray to the used DVD rack at the local Entertainment Tonight last weekend. They had two copies of Blade II left. The price, $12.95... Damn, I thought. Then I thought a little more, damn. So my wife told me to "just buy the damn disc, you look to stupid standing there holding both cases". No more thought necessary. It turned out ok too, the disc was fine and plays as I would expect. But, I'm still not one to just go buy a used disc at the rental pub! Most of them end up looking like they were rented and used as a coaster for a party. I say buy them new!

| I also prefer to buy new. I only buy dvds for movies that I really like a lot and know I will watch again or will want to push onto friends who haven't seen it yet. For me it's more of an emotional thing about buying new; I like knowing that whatever goodies came in the case will be there and there's no chance of a scratch. Since I buy so few I can afford the extra cost of buying new. And if the dvd has a special edition version available I'll probably buy that since I liked the movie so much. |

New Look for JAC.com: Also solid.
Soleil Moon Frye: I can think of a few Maids outside of Punky that I would rather have diggin in my dirties.
Funny little list you have there Fuersty. Hope you get 1% of it. ;) |

I am glad that we had someone like John Hughes to fill the need for teenie movies in the 80's. Whether you watch them or not, they are going to be produced year in and year out (let's see, we've The New Guy, Not Another Teen Movie, American Pie 2, Josie and the Pussycats... well you get my point), so we are lucky that we had a genuine craftsman such as Hughes to make quality, instead of quantity.
As far as the Kubricks of the film world, we may be watching the reniassance right now. I would say the most promising of the next wave would be David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky.
Fincher, like Kubrick, has created some darker, noirish type films. I can see a vague, mystical connection in 'feeling' between movies like Fight Club and se7en and Kubrick's early work like The Killing and Killers Kiss. Fincher however has achieved a great level of consumer acceptance which is something that Kubrick never obtained (nor desired?). I remember reading in an interview that WB lost movie on every Kubrick movie they released in the box office. In those days it was deemed a higher priority to just have a talent like Stanley on your label instead of making money from every release.
Those days aren't around anymore, so Aronofsky is probably going to have to make a box office hit or two to get budgets to use the creativity locked up in his melon. With only two features out right now, both are excellent works that show a great range. With talks of his next projects vascillating wildly between big and small features, I can't wait to see what his next film in my local theatre, no matter the budget. |

Well, what _did_ happen to Coppola? That is a great question to answer. I guess it just shows what Hollywood is truly like. We expect Hollywood to be as fair and free of a market as most of exist in, here in the "real" world. But, such is not the case. Coppola is one the most talented directors out there, but still cannot get a gig. I see his life story in many ways, running parallel to that of Orson Welles. Undoubtedly talented, but unable to work well within the system that exists within Hollywood to get their dream projects off the ground, so they end up kicking around for a long while. I know Coppola has had a 20 year plus running dream of making a live action Pinnochio that has been caught up in legal battles and money droughts... what can you do?
As far as his output goes, as Tom said it hasn't been vast for many a year. The Rainmaker has far and away been the best Grisham novel adaptation, but I would imagine that directing a John Grisham movie in Hollywood gets you about as much respect as the guy who directed episodes of Columbo. A lot of people still haven't forgiven him for Godfather, and especially so for the universally accepted boo-boo of casting Sophia as Corleone's daughter. That one still makes me shake my head. At least she got capped.
We'll see what the future brings. Do I think that Coppola will be sitting in the Directors chair for a movie called Megalopolis coming out in 2003? Hell no. But maybe... and maybe it'll be the Coppola of old. Maybe... |

Hudson Hawk is on DVD?@!?! They spent more money to put that thing on a disc? I thought they already cut their losses. That movie wasnt as bad as everyone had said, but it also wasnt as good as the initial hype. I remember when it first came on Skinimax back when I was still a fairly young lad, I had seen that movie about 100 times. But I think they played it every other 2 shift, so I had little choice.
BoilerRoom was solid. Just saw it at the end of 2002 in the Fuerst household ("Fuerst" hand!) and was pleasantly suprised. I was also pleasantly suprised by the lack of Affleck in that movie. I guess he fit the mold but I was still laughing at him "EAR TO EAR, BABY!"
Shutup Ben.
Also I remember seeing some 2x old school hitchcock films on DVD (pre-Hollywood). Out of the lot, Lady Vanishes is probably the best one to get... at least its the most enteratining of the bunch I have seen.
In addition to Matt's comments above "If you buy Swayze, YOU BE CRAZY!" is a creed I live by. You should too. |

Fuersty, you forgot to mention the Simpsons and South Park. I have Season 2 of the Simpsons and it was a measely $30 (now $40 or 50 probably) when it first came out. Not a bad deal compared to X-files, and the episodes are priceless.
Also I bought every single Flying Circus episode (14 DVDs) at CostCo for $99. Man what a deal for 14 DVDs. I still havent seen em all, but the ones I have seen are good. Especially the All-Twit Olympics. Priceless stupidity.
The one I would be pushing for would THE STATE DVD collection. MTV's the State was tremendously funny sketch comedy that I still have shoddy copies of on VHS. But like all good 'taped off Tv" collections there are some holes in the armor and mine are large. A big fat DVD box set would settle that one. |

You are loaded to the gills with useful techy info Fuerst! Thanks for clearing up that Region thing for me. I wonder what possible grounds they can actually take to peform such a suit.

Streams of tears Fuerst.... "HULK CRUSH BANNER!" Its funny even before I got it! Oh lordy.
Personally I disagree with the first paragraph where you say watching these networks is 'fun'. Personally there is nothing more irritating than your favorite movie being interupted by comercials, or swear words being bleaped or rephrased. Most notably is the hilarious Quick Change in which the f-bomb (ing) is replace with VIKING. "I'm gonna beat your VIKING head."
Sometimes if I do see the movie on TV I will watch it just long enough to get irritated, plug in the DVD of the actual movie, and then finsih just as the movie on TV is 30 minutes away from completion. Thats about it.
But I do miss "Saturday UP All Night" and who can beat the bikini car wash? No, I didnt say who can beat off to the bikini car wash so put your hand down, Droid. |
| Matt Fuerst | January 29th, 2003 | Reply |
Good points abound there Tomas. As far as Dude Wheres My Car?... Well there is no such thing as bad publicity so as long as the sheep keep on flowing into jackasscritics.com I could really care.
I too was really disappointed with the Hulk trailer. According to superbowl-ads.com 1.7% of people said that the Hulk ad was their favorite. While thats a small amount it obviously tweaked some peopls fancy. Personally, I feel like the action CGI of recent releases such as Blade II and SW Episode II took away from the action. It is tremendously fake looking and plainly obvious when the movie switches from real characters to the animated ones. I'll probably see Hulk just because I'm a comic book nerd and thats what comic book nerds do, but I wouldn't encourage anyone to do the same.
The best upcoming comic book movies:
X-Men 2
Hellboy (If it ever gets made)
Daredevil
Hulk
I put Daredevil above Hulk b/c it should have far less cheesy CGI and should allow for some real character development (yes, even with Benny Wenny in the main role) than I imagine the CGI-happy Hulk will. |

Well I would probably put forward that the Oscars are the same today as they were 'back then'. Hmm lets look at Best Picture. 1989 Driving Miss Daisy won Pic of the year. That one sure isn't on anyones Top 10, Top 20 or probably Top 100 list today. Left out in the cold that year was My Left Foot, Born on the Fourth of July (Stone's next picture is going to be about an academy that has a conspiracy to make sure he never wins an award) along with some less deserving movies. I'm not the most studied film critic, but I am sure this is an endlessly repeating cycle...
Now the December onslaught.. I guess we have that Harvey Weinstein character over at Miramax to thank for that.. that guy knows how to push his movies, eh? |

In rebutal to this I think I should list 5 movies that would kill a first date:
1. Scarface - Yeah the guys love Pacino and "say hello to my little friend." but the ladies don't really care for a coked up Cuban for 3 solid agonizing de palma hours.
2. Die Hard - And by this, I mean to sum up any old action film. Rambo is guilty as is Predator. You are getting no where with this.
3. Dumb and Dumber - I love the movie but its best left for the guys. Unless you have a woman with you that enjoys the screwy comedies you might want to pass on this one.
4. American History X - I'll pass on any movie that involves and male-to-male shower scene.
5. Saving Private Ryan - This is sort of a combination of Die Hard and Scarface movies. Its long and there is too much damn violence. This won't help matters much.
Actually I have to disagree with Matt on whether vampire movies would be good. I know there is a lot of necking going on in those films, but when it comes down to witchcraft... hmmm, it might take some bending. Interview with a Vampire might be ok though. They will oogle over Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise...let em! |

One more thing. Late winter and early spring are historically bad movie markets. Nothing good ever comes out in these months because if it was any good, they would have released it in time for Oscar Buzz. Also what happens in February? Valentines Day. So you get a bunch of sappy romantic comedies.
In a few months we will start seeing the action extravaganza movies, then slowly we will start to see a few more movies with a little bit of substance. But December is usually when the good stuff comes out.
What about Anger Management? Is that any good? |
| Matt Fuerst | April 6th, 2003 | Reply |
Hmm.. well where to begin.
Chicago for Best Film. People seem to think this is akin to the Gladiator selection from a few years back. Novel at the time, no one remembers it years later. (Tastes great, less filling)
Scorsese for Director. Yeah, that should have happened. No one has done more for film history that I can think of in recent times (again not that I am omniscent or anything). Plus I have my personal problems with Polanski which are already well documented.
Michael Moore - I am suprised to hear Tom take the stance that he does. Whilst I agree that Moore has the right to say whatever he wants, whenever he wants, I thought the forum was quite inappropriate for his tirade. More than trying to help people "see the light" or whatever he is shooting for, it comes off pretty plainly that Michael Moore is up there promoting... Michael Moore.
If I was elected programmer of the decade by the ACM (I understand I am on the ballot), I would be honored and respect the ceremony of acceptance and not bring my own politics one way or the other into it. That's as close to bringing it into my own existance as I can, but that's just one Jackasses opinion. |

paul thomas anderson:
his movies just don't engage me. the characters, the stories, they just don't do it, they don't catch me or interest me.
clearly he's aiming to churn out artsy thinky films - and personally i dont think they work to well in the 'thinky' department. they may be artsy purely because they're ostentatious.
wachowskis:
bound - was fantastic with lesbian icing. the matrix was fantastic. reloaded - dear god, they pulled a lucas.
i'm pretty skeptical of these two now. they didn't seem to craft the second with the same attention to detail and dedication as the first.
sam mendes
american beauty was overrated. it was well directed but the story wasn't engaging. maybe if i was in the middle of my midlife crisis. road to perdition was serviceable
nothing fantastic from him yet, but nothing in the negative column either.
darren arnofsky
pi was fantastic. granted a little slow, but thats the subject matter. i haven't caught requiem yet - though you'd think it'd be high on the list with jennifer connelly going A2A for smack, but i just can never remember it when i'm renting
kevin smith
dependable. not putting out anything great though. when he leaves slapstick behind and aims for romance and social commentary, he does poorly.
Christopher McQuarrie
usual suspects was fantastic. way of the gun wasn't half as good though.
Christopher Nolan
memento was fantastic
and i didn't find insomnia to be a negative. not great, but not a negative. |

Matt brings up a good point. What has happened this year? Anything good out there?
There has been mostly steamin piles of forgettable popcorn films. Hulk? Fast and Furious? Has any of this been worth a darn? I always say that the good films come out in December though. I will wait until then, but hope that sometime in August I get a nice suprise.
From that list I would say Anger Management was a fun entertaining film. I'd watch it again, but wouldnt make it part of my permanent collection. Jack Nicholson goin whack on Adam Sandler is worth a theatre's randsom.
One thing holding me back from seeing more in theatres is price!$!$!$ $10 a pop at most of these joints in the chicago land area. Boo hoo. Also when is the next coen movie? |

maybe its because he read the questions first, saw a pile of softball questions concealing a big kick in the nuts (re: 3rd season being crap), and got a little testy.
perhaps a more diplomatic phrasing would have resulted in a less-defensive subject. maybe a more thick-skinned or level-headed subject would have returned a less reactionary result.
but you're jackasses interviewing a jackass. it smacks of irony, and could set a fantastic interviewing precedent.
yes, it was a legit question - and likewise, his being angry is a legit response. i chuckled quite a bit through the interview - i just wish his comedy/anger delivered more than 1 line at a time.

| Dude, that interview was lame, and i'm directing that insult to the interviewer. Fuck, man, do some research if you're going to interview a genius like Showalter. His sarcastically stern (and somewhat defensive) responses were totally apropriate to such stupid (and insulting) questions. How could you possibly think the last season of The State's comedy level "dropped"? What the hell?! You're lucky he didn't just get up and leave....but that goes to show how cool he was for even responding (comedically) to such a fucking stupid question. |

I ran out and bought the first fellowship DVD. And I bought Unforgiven, One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, True Romance, and Amadeus early on. Now they ALL have super special releases that are affordable and loaded with goodies. I have my movie and thats it.
Boo hoo. Fellowship; I knew what I was getting into. It had enough extras for me, and I wasnt a huge fan. The others caught me off guard. I am still waiting on a decent release of good fellas. |

| We seem to buy DVD's one, two, three, four and even five at a time for some stupid reason. Walmart is our favorite DVD playground. Where else can you browse the new clothes section for mom and then buy a cart full of DVD's at $5.88 each? Damn good deals if you ask me. Hell, after picking up a few of the $5.88 disc's, you move to the $9.44 rack and pick up one from there. Then if that's not enough for the "hunger" you slide into the high dollar $14.00 - $15.00 section and if you really feel lucky you might even spot a current release for around $20.00... I'm not sure how many DVD's we have (less than 200) but it's too many to start a new collection if DVD's go by the way side. |

the man gets paid precisely because he's inconsistant. he writes reviews intending to set off some sort of reaction. what he wants to do, is what you did inadvertantly with that 'Dude, Where's My Car' review. he's aiming to get his review talked about.
also, being a 'hollywood insider' he tends to play the 'academy' game. that is - he fluffs reviews for friends and employers.
i mean, the guy wrote a sequel to a movie, based on a book -he-never-read-.
then he reviewed this same (his own) movie. granted he didn't give it a star rating, but he sure makes it sound like the greatest thing ever. not even some pseudo-objective lamenting over missed opportunities.

he's worthless.

Michael Moore is a sensationalist hippocrit.
bowling for columbine should never have even been considered for an Oscar for documentary - simply because it was -not- a documentary. 90% of it was staged. and most of it was done intentionally to misrepresent the situation as actually -being- a documentary.
i could care less what moore said on stage, or whether it was the right forum or not. the point is that -real- documentaries that could have used some attention for their makers got passed over by a snake-oil salesman.
read up on this fraud from your home-state.

I completely agree with your Ebert issues. Gigli gets 2.5 stars, and Fellowship of the ring and Two towers only get 3? 1.5 stars for the Usual Suspects?
I wonder if Ebert keeps a bottle of whiskey in his jacket and takes a nip throughout the course of a bad movie. |

2003... I hear you Tom. Cinemagoing is expensive, rentals are ridiculously overpriced and cable TV is not worth it.
However, there is one bargain that came to the forefront in 2003 - the cheap DVD purchase. How Blockbuster manages to be a marginal, crappy business when they charge $4 for a DVD that they likely pay a discounted $15 for just to sell the DVD used for $15 boggles my mind. Go forth and buy young Tomas! Instead of renting, just buy it brother. Then when you hate it, pass it along to me. |

I havent seen a lot of the movies you talk about in your column, Fuersty, but it speaks out about what I have been saying about this years movies... they seam to suck! I guess thats an easy thing for me to assume (like I said, having not seen many) but there havent been too many trailers that speak to me all year long.
Matchstick Men was fun, but nothing special. Lots of tricks I have seen Mammet do better.
Lost In Translation was funny, and probably the best movie I have seen this year.
The Elf was a fun fluffy movie that made quite a quick buck for a Christmas movie.
Matrix Reloaded was pretty good. I think I liked it more that you Fuersty, but I havent heard many good things about Revolutions.
Other then that, there are a lot of dark spots and blurs in my 2003 movie memory. |

The arm wrestling thing is all true though(see above) He was challenged and felt no need to defend his honor against the bottom feeding dredge that is jackasscritics.com.
The state = funny shit. we need that on DVD so that i can increase the disposable income of showalter, lennon, black, and marino. there is one caveat to that however; season three did suck balls. it was very SNL in its hopeless mediocrity.
Given hindsight we also would have called showalter and gotten him to say 'porno sex adict rocks newyork!' so that we could make a sound bite of it.
PS Mike Black please submit to an interview with us. we desperately need the hits!

Hi guys. My name's John Hartman. I'm from Denver. I hold B.A. in liberal arts. I'm 38 and I just produced my first independent film, entitled "Karma Rider."
The film, which is very mystical and fantasy-oriented, is based on a vietnam veteren's motorcycle quest accross the country. Trying to confront his phycholgical problems ( and bad dreams, which occupy much of the films space) the biker departs the Rocky Mountains, treking Eastward to seek inspiration from New England's wooden covered bridges, light houses, colonial structures, and historical Coastal forts. His dreams compell him to leave his woman, and job as substitute teacher, behind Or...stay where he is and go mad.
Along the way, the veteren wrecks his bike along a Rocky Mountain road, whereupon he encounters a long-haired, bearded holy man (singing and playing the guitar in a tree).Together the two men enter the hemits dwellings (a potatoe cellar in the mountains) They become fast friends! They decide to travel, on the motorcycle (a 1982 Kawasaki 1000) to New England, whereupon the veteren wrecks his bike again and is knocked unconscious. He awakes only to find that the holy sage is missing -- yet the sages sacred journal remains near the wrecked bike. This confuses the veteren to no end.
Seeking for his friend, the veteren suffers many flashbacks and nightmares -- all with special effects. He gives up the search, which results in even worse dreams, and his bike breaking down. A Mennonite family, in West Virginia, takes him in. The Mennonite father takes the vet on a swamy canoe trip (shot in the deeeep South, actually) where the vet confides in his problems.
Eventually, after the fireside chat with the Mennonite, and the worst nightmare ever, (complete with super special effects) he continues his search for the sage. He then finds the sage, who actually took on the vetern's fatal wounds (received from the bike wreck) so that he (the vet) might live and secure a second chance at life.
The problem is that the holy man is now in a walking about the East coast in a coma-like state. The vet needs to find him or the sage will die. In fact, the sage does die, but the vetern does not know this. As the search commenses, turning into days, the vet (consciously at this point) enters the astral plane, via meditation that the sage instructed him in prior to their bike wreck.
The vet enters the astral dream world, and finally finds his friend who has just left the material plane, but has also graduated to full sainthood -- because he (unconditionally) exchanged his life up for the vets -- the final test that the holy man had to pass before becoming liberated from the karmic wheel of birth and death.
So, there is a happy ending. The sage pays for the vets bad karma by "killing his karma" with the "Sacred Sword of Karma!!!" This done by running the vet through with the sword several times!...all shot on an iced-over river, where the vet is also instructed to dip his completely naked ass into the cold waters, so as to further cleanse away his bad karma.
The vet returns (now inspired by unconditional love) to the Rockies and takes up his job of teaching inner city toughs. The End!
In the early 90's, I acted in hollywood for about 1 1/2 years. My claim to fame was the lead role of a teenaged prostitute named, Casino, in, "White Trash," a b-film by Fred Baker. See TV guides review on "White Trash." I can also be viewed on "The Body Gaurd." I perfromed right next to Whittney Houston for nearly two days. I was the young, white, brown-haired, backstage guy (in a dark suit with a headset) My role was to direct Whitney to begin her decent down the steps onto the stage -- at the end of the film, where Kevin Kostner saves her. I did a lot of 90210 and other background work as well.

Amen Brother!
I dont see how blockbuster or any mega-vid store gets away with charging more for DVDs than VHS...just because its new.
When a new movie comes out (even in the old days), it usually costs somewhere between $90-120.00. Its amazing to me that the old mom/pop stores got by charging $3 a new release. THey would have to rent a movie ... a single cassette... 30-40 times to break even!
Compare that to a new DVD coming out for $20 (even less at Best Buy). Thats about a 500% break in the price. Logic would say the price of a DVD rental would drop.
Unfortunately logic takes the bench to greed. I havent been there in a while but last I checked a new Blockbuster DVD rental was something like $4.50. They are profiting in 4 rents.
BLOCKBUSTER IS EVIL! Go to your mom and pop stores! Go to your libraries... or better yet buy the movie yourself and put it on Ebay afterwards. It might be a better bargain! |
| Matt Fuerst | January 27th, 2004 | Reply |
It seems to me that renting a DVD for $4 is analogous to renting a car for $7,000. Take a quarter of what you pay for it new, and then put it on the market.
